The Classes have a positive atmosphere.

juniorchampsplus 030410 013 225x300 The Classes have a positive atmosphere.I started training with Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do School in 2001. I really enjoyed the classes; there is a good balance between learning and practising techniques and developing physical strength and fitness.

It feels good to be making steady improvement and to have a goal to work towards the next grading. With regular training, hard work and tremendous support from Mr Mayes, I obtained my black belt at the end of 2005.

I continued to train up to the end of 2006, at which point I left to work and travel. I am no longer in the Brighton area all the time but I return and train with Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do a number of times.

The classes still have the same positive atmosphere and it is great to see so many familiar faces progressing to senior colour belts and achieving their black belts!

You can train nearly every day!

dylancoughlan01 225x300 You can train nearly every day!“I joined Brighton Taekwon-Do as a blue tag about a year ago, and recently attained my red tag. I have been training in Taekwon-Do for a number of years before arriving in Brighton.

I tried a number of martial arts (all of which had their benefits), but decided on Taekwon-Do as it’s particular focus and benefits are exactly what I was looking for.

I was looking for something which develops fitness to a high-level as well self-defense.
For Taekwon-Do, quite a high level of stamina, speed and flexibility can be developed, all of which I was interesting improving.

Before joining this club, I have trained in Ireland, Scotland and Germany. The classes are exactly what I would expect:
challenging in a respectful and friendly environment ( and hard work, of course). Mr. Mayes fosters a productive and friendly atmosphere.
Each class during the week has a different focus, some for stamina, some for sparring etc., which allows you to focus on a particular part of Taekwon-Do, or to even train nearly every day!”

What is consistently impressive is the way Howard handles a class of all abilities.

harveywill01 225x300 What is consistently impressive is the way Howard handles a class of all abilities. Harvey (11) and Will (8) have been learning Taekwon-Do with Howard Mayes at Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School for two years.
We initially just wanted them to do something physical but have seen added benefits
in their approach to discipline and also their strength and stamina.

What is consistently impressive is the way Howard handles a class of all abilities and yet still
gives each student individual attention and advice to help them with their patterns and exercises.

Harvey and Will attend the Saturday morning class and getting out of bed early sometimes seems
like a bit of a chore after a busy week but even if they have been tempted to miss the odd Saturday,
once they are there they get really into it and we notice they have far more energy afterwards
which really sets them up for the day.

They are both hoping to eventually reach black belt and now they are a bit older they may start
doing an extra class in the week.

We have been really impressed by Howard’s teaching of his students -
he shows them an enormous amount of respect and in turn they really respect him.

We would really recommend Taekwon-Do – the boys have been through gradings to get their
belts and it teaches them that if they work hard, they achieve.
They have lots of fun doing it though and I think this is the key to why it works so well.

Severn started Taekwon-Do 2 years ago and she has never looked back.

severnbrand01 225x300 Severn started Taekwon Do 2 years ago and she has never looked back.Since Severn came home about 2 years ago with her Taekwon-Do leaflet saying “Mum I want to do this”, she has never looked back.

She started out attending afterschool on a Wednesday and then increased her training sessions to include Saturday mornings. She loves going to training and it is an established part of her weekly routine.

As a PE teacher I have a strong understanding of how important it is for children to be physically active and how this will help her to establish habits of a lifetime. Taekwondo-Do helps with her fitness and her ability to defend herself. Let’s just say play fights are a thing of the past in our house!

The other thing that has impressed me about Taekwon-Do is the values that it teaches such as respect and diligence, something which makes it rather unique compared with other activities. The grading system also helps with motivation; she has just got her green belt and was ecstatic about this.

Severn recently attended her first Taekwon-Do competition, which was a real confidence booster for her, and she is looking forward to doing it again.

I would highly recommend Taekwon-Do to other children and parents.

Hayden thoroughly enjoys the classes which include a wide variety of activities. The instruction is very clear with excellent feedback so students know exactly what they should be doing.

Howard is a great teacher and able to explain things at the right level to all ages without being in the least bit patronising. As a result all the children have the greatest respect for him.

Hayden’s confidence, fitness and attention to instruction have all improved as a result of the lessons which he has enjoyed so much that he regularly wants to do extra lessons in addition to his regular session. Howard is very flexible about this so you can do as much as you want.

Hayden adores the Junior Squad Training sessions on occasional Saturday afternoons with flying high kick tournaments being a favourite. I genuinely enjoy the workout, as well as the people!

herbieelena01 225x300 I genuinely enjoy the workout, as well as the people!I started at Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School both as a way of keeping fit and of learning a useful sport. Having been physically idle for decades, the initial few months were tough but I never thought of packing it in – apart from anything else, I couldn’t lose face in front of my daughter!

The training has its lighter moments too and can be quite amusing at times. Although the sessions are still demanding I now know I can cope with them and regard them as a challenge. I only attend once a week but since starting TKD I’ve lost (unwanted) weight and feel both fitter and more confident.

Despite being, at 53, somewhat the veteran of the class, I like to think I keep up with the younger pack most of the time, and hope to continue to do so for a while yet.

My initial reaction to my dad’s suggestion of starting a martial art was one of shock and surprise. ‘ME?’, I said, ‘doing Taekwon-Do?’ I laughed, but once I realised my dad was serious about it, I reconsidered and decided to come along to the first session. I found that I enjoyed myself more than I had anticipated, and welcomed the challenging exercises, despite being assured I didn’t have to complete them, as I was a beginner.

Over the two years my flexibility, fitness and confidence has grown tremendously. Attending classes only once a week, my progress through the belts perhaps hasn’t been as quick as I would have liked, but I now consider myself to be a strong Green Belt, as I have not rushed into any grading I was not ready for.

My favourite part of the sessions has to be the finale – the sparring. This is something a couple of years ago I never would have thought myself either interested in, or able to do. Since then I have participated in two competitions, winning medals each time. I know I will continue with Taekwon-Do, not only for my fitness, but also because I genuinely enjoy the workout, as well as the people.

The Taekwon-Do classes are always very well structured and exciting.

stevedickson02 225x300 The Taekwon Do classes are always very well structured and exciting.I’m 44 years old and I have been going to the Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School for 2½years and I am now a Red belt.

Some of the advantages I get from Taekwon-Do are:Fitness, Strength, Flexibility, Coordination, Confidence

Taekwon-Do is a Martial Art that involves agility, speed and coordination

The classes are fun and enjoyable. As well as mastering the technique you are also taught a knowledge about the Korean Martial Art. It also makes you aware of discipline and respect for each other.

Howard Mayes is a great teacher. His Martial Art skills and knowledge are excellent. He always delivers a very well structured and exciting class, making you want to come back for more.

My health has improved significantly. Since starting Taekwon-Do my strength and stamina have increased. My cardio vascular fitness and flexibility are much better.

Most of the sessions last for either one and half or two hours and accommodate anyone at any age and fitness level. I always feel that I have had a great workout and learn something new everytime. After each grading I gain more confidence to reach my goal of getting to Black belt and beyond.

I have met a lot of very pleasant and respectful people and we all help each other to gain the confidence to be good at this semi-contact Martial Art.

I thoroughly enjoy Taekwon-Do

tomholmes01 225x300 I thoroughly enjoy Taekwon DoI started Taekwon-Do, when I was influenced by a good friend at the age of 14 and have progressed through the art to the current age of 18.

When I went to the first lesson I was inspired by the way the martial art was taught and how I swore an oath to become a black belt; this became a critical foundation as it drived me to become a committed and determined individual.

Alongside this, nowadays, I particularly enjoy the strength and endurance exercises that Mr Mayes initiates each lesson. This is a major part of Taekwon-Do, developing strength and power. This could account for my gold medal at my first ever Taekwon-Do competition .

I thoroughly enjoy Taekwon-Do as it is an accredited sport and allows me to work out, stretch and build up muscle.
Above all Mr Mayes has helped me develop the skills that I have mentioned. He never doubts people’s abilities and I respect him for helping me achieve a gold medal in my first competition. Taekwon-Do is a sport, but improves and enhances your fitness, so why not come and try it!

There is an over whelming sense of respect.

williamclark01 225x300 There is an over whelming sense of respect.William has always been a very a active boy and has always enjoyed physical exercise as most young kids do. He expressed an interest in joining some sort of sports club as long as it was not football. So I had a look on the internet to see what was available in the Brighton area and suggested a few options. We tried a couple of things but they didn’t seem to catch his interest or imagination until we walked into the Stanly Deason Leisure Centre one Saturday morning nearly two years ago.

William and my self had absolutely no idea about Taekwon-Do, what it entailed, what it was, or its structure. But then Howard Mayers called out his immortal words “right guys line up” and that was it, from that moment William was hooked. He immediately felt comfortable and in an environment which he could relate to and succeed in.

The structure of Taekwon-Do is such that the children develop physical and mental skills at their own speed whilst constantly being challenged and stretched but never being put under pressure from other children or instructors. There is an over whelming sense of respect for the instructors and the other students. If only our normal schools were like that.

William has never looked back since that first day, and has moved up through the belts and attended competitions winning medals. Taekwon-Do has now become a big part of his life which he enjoys immensely and I’m very proud of his achievements and excited about his future progress. As a parent I cannot recommend Taekwon-Do enough.

The whole organisation of the classes is geared to children learning physical, mental, and social skills in a disciplined and controlled environment that is enjoyable safe and fun. There is a good sense of healthy competition and inspiration. When the children see one of the Howard’s pupils and now assistant instructors wearing an England team track suit there can be no greater incentive or feeling of being in the right place.

The parents of the Taekwon-Do students have also been inspired to get off there butts and take part in some form of physical activity as well, either playing badminton or going to the gym while the kids take part in the morning class.
Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do School has been a great success for William and many other children and comes highly recommended.

This is the only sport they have both stuck to!

dominicalexcritchley01 300x225 This is the only sport they have both stuck to!I have 2 sons, Dominic 11 and Alex 10, who have been doing Taekwon-Do for a few years now. Dom is now blue belt, red tag and his aim is to get to Black Belt! Alex is green belt and will hopefully being doing his blue tag very soon.

They both enjoy the Taekwon-Do classes, it is good exercise and keeps the boys fit and strong, it has also helped with their self confidence.

They have both made some good friends at Taekwon-Do. Sometimes it is hard to keep it going, but once they have been to the class they always enjoy it.

Kids have a tendancy to give things up too easily these days and this is the only sport they have both stuck to. The classes are well structured and enjoyable, they do a good warm up to start the class, then they practice and learn their Taekwon-Do, they normally finish with sparring which both of the boys really enjoy, it really is an all round sport.

I would recommend it to anyone. Howard Mayes is a good instructor and has the respect of all the children that he teaches.

I will encourage my sons to continue until they reach their ultimate goal !

I highly recommend Howard’s Taekwon-Do classes, I should have started years ago, but it is never too late. After just 6 months I already feel the difference with improved fitness and stamina, but also sleep better and it is a great outlet for stress. So, if you are thinking of taking up a martial art, because you want to improve your fitness, flexibility, and strength or lose some weight, whilst learning to defend yourself then you are looking in the right place.

Howard will push you to achieve these goals whilst you have lots of fun with a great bunch of like minded people.

The respect and the integrity shown, shone through!

tobykittywynne01 225x300 The respect and the integrity shown, shone through! Our relationship with Taekwon-Do started four years ago. We had heard of a friend going and thought it would be nice for Toby to join a club and meet other children, none of us had done any martial arts before and we knew nothing whatsoever about Taekwon-Do.

As both a parent and as a teacher I was immediately drawn to the disciplinarily and respectful aspects of the art. The respect and the integrity shown, shone through and were focused upon at all times. Not only have Toby and Kitty developed a wealth of friendship, their self-esteem has been boosted and they both have a healthy respect for others.

Watching the whole group develop over the years, I have seen children who can’t sit still and constantly fidget, mature quickly and become controlled and disciplined individuals. This is mainly due I believe to Mr. Mayes’ positive attitude, his clear and high-quality instructions and his caring and friendly nature.

Regular competitions and squad training sessions have developed another trait of trust and support amongst the team. The youngsters respect the older children and the older children have been excellent role-models for the younger children. Achievement is enjoyed by all, and is regularly celebrated.

Toby says, “I like the ‘flying side kick’ and the ‘sparring’ competitions in the junior squad training sessions.”

Kitty says, “I like when we put the mats out and do the flying kicks!”

Taekwon-Do is unique from other martial arts!

charliebishopwilliams01 225x300 Taekwon Do is unique from other martial arts!I started Taekwon-Do seven years ago when I was just ten years old. Since then I have progressed a lot and gained my black belt two years ago at the age of fifteen.

The classes are of mixed sex, which is unusual for martial arts, and everyone has great respect for each other. Mr. Mayes is a fantastic teacher and helps each individual to achieve their maximum potential.

Taekwon-Do is unique from other martial arts as it’s more than a physical activity, it has scientific knowledge behind the movements to ensure maximum power and at the same time you learn the theory and some Korean.

I was Mr Mayes’ first female black belt and I compete for England. With the England team I have travelled to many different countries, such as Canada, Sweden, Slovenia, Croatia and Poland to name a few.

Taekwon-Do can bring you many fantastic opportunities and give you a great sense of success. I have made many new friends, both English and of different nationalities, through Taekwon-Do and have had many wonderful experiences. Taekwon-Do makes exercise fun and interesting.

Starting Taekwon-Do has been one of the best things I have done, it gives teenagers a goal, something to focus on and work toward. Also you learn great self-defence and learn self-control.

I have been training now at Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School for 6 1/2 years. By training in Taekwon-Do i have gained confidence, better fitness, flexibility, agility, power, skill, strength and very good knowledge of self defence.

Right from starting Taekwo-Do as a white belt we learn; courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit. These are the 5 tenets of Taekwon-Do. Doing Taekwo-Do is not just about the application of movements but learning to apply these 5 tenets into our personal lives.

I am currently training for my 2nd degree which will make me one of  Mr. Mayes’ more senior students that currently train with him. I intend to carry on training and keep going through the grades until i have reached my maximum potential.

Guy loved Howard’s classes from the very start.

guylewis011 225x300 Guy loved Howards classes from the very start. My son, Guy, is now 9 ½ years old. He first started with Howard when he was 5. The reason for choosing a Taekwon-Do was because I thought it would be good for strength, flexibility, stamina and also to provide him with a form of self-defence for later life.

Guy loved Howard’s classes from the very start. Howard manages to combine the necessary discipline with a good sense of humour, which he allows the children to quietly discover for themselves.

Guy quickly progressed through the grades and also regularly enters competitions, which we all find extremely tense and exciting to watch. There have been some unexpected benefits from Guy doing Taekwon-Do. The first is that Taekwon Do is underpinned by a moral code, which the children need to understand and apply to their lives. This ensures that they develop a sense of self-discipline which I don’t believe is present in some other sports. Secondly, Guy had to do some textbook learning for the gradings and, in the early years, this was essentially the first form of examination that he had taken. This proved very beneficial when Guy began having tests at school. Thirdly, and most surprisingly, I had always assumed that martial arts were an individual pursuit. This is not the case, however. Guy has made some important friends and this becomes particularly clear when he attends competitions. The Brighton club supports each other tremendously and, in particular, the older children act as role models and mentors to the younger children. The successes achieved in competition actually feel like shared successes rather than individual ones.

There have been times when Guy has said that he would rather stay at home and watch TV (I think we all feel like that about exercise, most of the time!). I have persevered because whenever Guy is doing a class he absolutely loves it and he has never come away regretting the time spent training with his friends. I think that it is an extremely time-efficient way of improving co-ordination and getting fit and, even if children do not continue through to the senior ranks, the benefits will always stay with them. Also, it is an activity that can generally be combined very well with other sports, as it is not time intensive and there are so many classes organised by Howard that it is always possible to find one that fits with your own child’s weekly schedule.

Overall, Taekwon-Do has proved a backbone and constant in Guy’s life. He has tried other activities from time to time and the physical advantages he has gained from doing Taekwon-Do from a young age are clearly carried over to other sports. I would absolutely recommend Howard’s excellent teaching and motivation to children of both sexes and all ages. Taekwon-Do is unusual in that the children train and compete in mixed sex classes and this is another benefit. There are very few activities I can think of that are so time and cost effective and we are extremely lucky to have found Howard’s classes, purely by accident. He is equally enthusiastic with children who train just once a week for general fitness as he is with those who are competing for national honours. The other parents who take their children to Howard’s classes are a very friendly and likeable group of people and we all are extremely grateful to Howard for his professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication.

I am sure anyone else who wants to try Taekwon-Do will also have alot of fun.

santosleonaalphonso01 225x300 I am sure anyone else who wants to try Taekwon Do will also have alot of fun.I’m Santos, aged 9 years, and I started Taekwon-Do classes in 2005, with the Brighton Taekwon-Do School. I have learned a great deal. I have learned to defend myself, it has given me a lot of confidence, and I have learned to focus. Doing these classes once a week has helped me build up my stamina, it has made me very fit and sharp but most of all I have a lot of fun.

Taekwon-Do has very varied patterns and defensive moves. With the efficient and experienced teachers I have learned to do my patterns very well and have won gold and silver medals at two different championships which to me is a great achievement, but most of all, it is a great experience just taking part with so many other contestants. I am now a blue belt red tag and have progressed well through the grades.

Last september my sister Leona, who is 6 years, also started coming to the classes once a week with me and she absolutley enjoys it. At first, before she started, she was not too sure and keen but once she started she really enjoys coming. It has given her everything it has given me. She is a yellow belt and is doning really well.

I am sure anyone else who wants to try Taekwon-Do will also have alot of fun at the training session I am having while learning to defend themselves.

A very positive ethos.

roshnipreetimistry011 225x300 A very positive ethos. Roshni and Preeti started training at Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School just after their fifth birthday. Our aim was to get them doing some sort of exercise which was fun and at the same time structured. My wife and I did not expect our daughters to last long because most clubs are male dominated.

At Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do school students come from a wide range of backgrounds. The school has a very positive ethos and student behave sensibly, demonstrating good attitudes to learning and very clearly enjoying their Taekwon-Do. Lessons are very well structured to meet the needs of all students from white belts to black belt. Mr Mayes the instructor has very good knowledge and is dedicated to Taekwon-Do. And has good communication link with both parents and students which help towards motivating the students. Other black belts who help out during the classes are also friendly, helpfully and have a good bonding with students.

During summer time, after the morning session of Taekwon-Do, children and their parents are invited to a picnic and a game of rounders in the local park. This is a fun social event and a good way to make friends in a relaxed environment.

Since joining the Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School Roshni and Preeti have made lots of friends and the funny thing is they really enjoy their Taekwon-Do classes. We as parents have noticed they have excellent stamina and increased flexibility by attending the class. Through Taekwon-Do, we expect our children as they grow to have strength, self confidence and be well co-ordinated.

Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School is very successful and this can be seen by the number of students attending the classes and by the number students achieving medals in both the English and the National Junior Championships.

Always eager to learn.

kierenturnball01 225x300 Always eager to learn. Our 10 year old son, Kieran joined Howard Mayes’ Brighton Taekwon Do School in April 2005 and is currently at a level of ‘blue belt’. Kieran attends these lessons once a week and is always eager to learn new patterns and techniques. He thoroughly enjoys the process of implementing his newly acquired skills. At home Kieran enthusiastically explains and demonstrates his new moves to me with energy and confidence!

Over the past 4 years we have noticed that Kieran’s co-ordination, fitness and confidence levels have improved greatly. He is very keen to continue with the classes, including the squad training and ultimately achieve his black belt!

Howard is an excellent instructor and is respected by all who attend his classes.

It’s a very flexible martial art

nicoannamarshall01 225x300 Its a very flexible martial artNico (10) and Anna (7) have been doing Taekwon-Do in Howard Mayes’ classes for two years, and love it. It’s a very flexible martial art – you can concentrate on individual patterns, sparring or special techniques (Anna likes the flying side kicks).

The kids get a lot of satisfaction from moving up through the different colours of belt. There are real confidence and fitness benefits. Most of all Howard is a fantastic instructor who has the respect of all the children.

The lessons are fun and inspiring.

davidpetermckenna01 225x300 The lessons are fun and inspiring. When my boys were 5 and 7 years old I thought it would be a good idea to let them have a few Taekwon-Do lessons to improve their self-confidence.

Over five years later they’re still attending classes every week. They describe the lessons as fun and inspiring. It’s certainly given them loads of confidence, as well as making them very strong for their ages.

The classes are very well run and prove you can still have fun in a very strongly disciplined environment.

I decided to give Taekwon-Do a go and am really glad I did.

stevehorrup01 225x300 I decided to give Taekwon Do a go and am really glad I did. I had always wanted to try a Martial Art but didn’t actually get around to it until I was in my 30′s. I finally decided to give TaeKwon-Do a go and am really glad I did.

I’ve been going for just over 4 years now and have found it to be hard work but in a very friendly atmosphere to train in with everyone at senior levels offering support along the way. I had done practically nothing exercise wise for years but I find the sessions accommodate all levels of fitness ranging from absolute beginners up to the more advanced levels.

The class instructor (Howard Mayes) is always happy to help with any questions and guidance offered when/where needed in a professional/friendly/helpful manner.

In addition, there is a class most days of the week so its also fairly easy to schedule classes that suit when you can fit them in. The classes themselves range from 1 and half hours to 2 hours duration depending on which day you attend and either way you receive full work out including stamina/endurance exercises along with various other activities and strengthening exercises that help with the sparring that comes later down the line. The classes are adaptive to people’s ability but you are pushed to make sure that you are also giving your best effort to anything you are applying yourself to.
